Coaches Corner

Fellas,

The second half of our 2007-08 season is upon us. And while we have qualified for a home playoff match in April we cannot be satisfied with how we let ourselves down by not finishing atop the MARFU.

It is my assumption that you all have been working hard on your fitness. The holidays are long over. The time for joyful work is upon us. We have a goal. We want to be playing significant matches in June. How are you preparing yourself to help the Club meet that goal?

One of the tasks taken on by the coaching staff this past winter has been to codify our style of play and develop an overall game plan for the upcoming season.

It is crucial that each and every club member be in attendance at our team meeting this Saturday, February 9th. -- BE HERE FOR THIS MEETING. We are creating your future and the future of our Club. Let your voice be heard.

I look forward to seeing everyone on February 9th to kick off an exciting conclusion to our 2007-08 season.

Yours in Rugby,

Coach Jim Bonner

2008 Spring Practice

Old Boys

From the desk of Wade Gowl:

  • The Toronto York Yeoman match on April 19th revives a tradition from the 70’s and 80’s where we would play them every April, home one year- away the next. Hosting them was a very big part of the fun. It made friends that lasted. Our old boys will be out in force doing their part with the Yeoman bringing down an old boys side in addition to their club side to play our first’s. Put your thinking caps on and start gearing up to volunteer to host one or two for that weekend. The good times will last forever. Coming in that Friday night on a bus we’ll meet them at Mum’s and divvy them out. They used to put their second and third sider’s on us that night before the match to drink us up, in Canada, and we wouldn’t see their firsts till match time. Or at least it seemed that way! So if you’re not on the A side, you’re not left out of this fun.

  • Poster Schedules will be here soon.

  • New BC t-shirts will also be available soon
    $15 for current BC players
    $20 for non-players

  • Contact me if you’d like a 15 day pass to the Maryland Athletic Club. There’s the new one that just opened downtown.

  • Wade is coming off the wagon, after 5 years without a beer, to have one (or two) for charity. He will be celebrating the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation at one of our rugby sponsors, Padonia Station (see the new poster schedule) on Monday, February 11. The fundraiser will be a Battle of the Guest Bartender Contest. Wade will be on from 7:00 - 7:30 PM. Ask him for a shooter coupon and ticket in advance to vote for your favorite guest bartender there (Wade). Come on in!

    Re: Poly High School Rugby
I am coaching Poly's rugby team this year (its first) and coaching is only a part of what I'll be doing...That said I am looking for some immediate monetary support and I thought a letter to our BC community might be a good way to get things started...let me know...any suggestions would be helpful.

How important is it that the school is recognizing the team? While it is only a club, this is the first public high school to say, "yeah, sure, we'll give it a go."

THIS IS A HUGE STEP FORWARD! Usually schools want nothing to do with it for a variety of reasons. This is our chance to show Baltimore how tight the rugby community is, (or isn't).

    Thanks,
